Review – Barbara Brady

Not only will true scholars of great literature be delighted with The Bridge of Dreams, by Robert N. Lawson, but anyone who enjoys a good tale will be pulled into a saga filled with romance, drama, adventure, and mystery.  Each chapter, carefully fashioned into exactly 20 pages, is a story in itself.  A sonnet at the beginning of each chapter gives a hint of the story to follow.

The characters are compelling.  The elusive Betty controls both men and women with her beauty and feminine wiles.  She is a talented actress, who is beautiful, charismatic and manipulative.  Her life sporadically intertwines with playwright Jack, who has a fondness for beautiful women, and with Jordan, who frantically pursues his dreams of fame as an actor.  Laura, the surrogate mother of Betty’s child, and Tom the football hero, all play a role in the complicated lives of the characters.  Shoko, a companion to Natasha, “The Countess,” an eccentric and wealthy old woman, offers readers a touch of Japanese history and literature.

By the end of the book readers will ponder the mystery and meaning of life, death, and the hereafter.  The companion book, The Collected Sonnets of Robert N. Lawson, contains all 24 of the sonnets found in The Bridge of Dreams, plus almost 70 others, that are both amusing and thoughtful.  Following each sonnet the author answers questions we all ask:  “Why did you write this particular sonnet?”  The ultimate teacher that he is, Dr. Robert N. Lawson also gives the reader a short lesson on how to write sonnets.  What more could a reader want?   Both books are well worth the investment and should be a part of your reading repertoire.

    Hi Ms. Barbara,

I guess you are the one who wrote the wodnerful story “Comeuppance,” from the Grandmother’s book of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, right? The story was very well written and it had a very positive impact on my life.

    All the best,
